Router vs. Modem: Do you need both?
Simple
answer is yes.
Modem
functions as your connection to the internet, harnessing it and bringing to
your house and routers are medium by which you are able to connect your devices
to internet. However the notion that you need two separate devices is not
entirely true. Many companies are now making router and modem combos that both
connect to and disperse the internet.
There
will be many advantages with the dual-modem router like you need less space,
but with this there will be some problem. A common problem with combined
devices is that they are unable to pack as many features in as you would get on
separate devices. And with a separate modem you won’t have to buy a new one as
frequently – it often easier and less expensive to upload each device
separately when needed.
How much speed you need?
If
you are looking for a modem then Mbps or megabits per second matters, because
this number can make internet services great. The greater the number more will
be the speed. Modems can have speed varying speed from 10 Mbps to 1000 Mbps.
Modem: Modem is a device which performs modulation and
demodulation of signals. It works on data link of ISO-OSI reference model and
doesn’t have any inbuilt intelligence. It primarily focus on to deliver
information as it is in form it derives from ISP without checking any security
threats as it is not smart enough. Thus any threat gets easily access to the
network through modem. The modems are available in market are the types of:
a)
Dial up modems
b)
DSL modems
(broadband modems)
c)
Cable modems
d)
Mobile broadband
modems.
Router: Router is a networking device which associates
various network with each other for LAN and WAN. It works on physical data link
and network layer of ISO-OSI reference model and maintains routing table to
forward and route data packet to desired destination path. Router uses a
firewall to examine the incoming data packets by using firewall and other antivirus
software. This provides the more security to threats. The main types of routers
available in market are
a)
Hardware type
b)
Software type
This
was the brief introduction and technical specifications for router and modem.
Router provides security against threats against malware or suspicious data
because it has inbuilt artificial intelligence, but there is no such a facility
is provided in modem.
21st
century is the era of digital world. Every country in the world is focusing on digitization.
And in achieving the milestone internet is playing a vital role, the demand for
internet in the decade has been increased abruptly. Telecom companies are competing
each other. Every day or after sometime new plans are launched, but for the
good internet speed the choice for router and modems is always a point of
discussion. There are many 4G enabled smart phones which provide high speed
internet but gaming lovers, entrepreneurs, industries, corporate etc. need
something extra. That’s why common people are also taking interest in these
devices. In the whole scenario why the
manufacturing companies of modems and router will remain behind. Now as per
giants like Tech-Crunch, Digital trend etc., we are going to present best five
modems/routers of all time. See which suits your need.
1. ASUS RT-AX88U AX6000 Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router.
ASUS RT-AX88U AX6000 Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi Router (Black) |
Tech Specs:
RT-AX88U is a 4x4
dual-band Wi-Fi router that provides 160MHz bandwidth and 1024-QAM for
dramatically faster wireless connections. With a total networking speed of
about 6000Mbps - 1148Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and 4804Mbps on the 5GHz band --
RT-AX88U is 2.3X faster than 802.11ac 4x4 dual-band routers.
With a revolutionary combination of
OFDMA and MU-MIMO technology, 802.11ax technology provides up to 4X greater
network capacity and efficiency in traffic-dense environments.
Previous-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi can only handle one device at a time on each
network channel, which is an inefficient use of available bandwidth. OFDMA
support in the 802.11ax Wi-Fi standard divides each channel into small
sub-channels, allowing signals from multiple devices to be bundled together and
transmitted simultaneously, reducing latency for a smoother, more responsive
Wi-Fi experience.
In most cases, your RT-AX88U can
deliver smooth, reliable Wi-Fi to every part of your home. But Wi-Fi coverage
can be affected by many factors — room layout, construction materials, and even
furnishings. ASUS AiMesh is an innovative new router feature that fixes these
problems: it creates a whole-home Wi-Fi network using multiple ASUS routers.
AiMesh is powerful, flexible and you can use a mix of ASUS router models —
protecting your investment! AiMesh gives you time-saving central control, and
seamless roaming capability. AiMesh is Wi-Fi you can rely on — for all your
devices, all the time!
